SINUS LIFT SURGERY FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS

Creating Space in the Upper Jaw for Implant Placement

Sinus lifts are performed to increase bone height in the upper back jaw when natural bone is insufficient to support implants.

ADDRESSING BONE LOSS IN THE POSTERIOR UPPER JAW

Preparing for Secure Implant Placement Near the Sinus

In the upper jaw near the molars and premolars, the bone can be thinner due to natural anatomy or bone loss over time. When this space is limited, dental implants may not be possible without additional support.

A sinus lift creates room by gently raising the sinus membrane and placing bone graft material to build up the height of the jawbone.

You may be a candidate for a sinus lift if:

  • You’ve lost teeth in the upper jaw and have reduced bone height
  • Your sinus sits low, limiting the space available for implants
  • Imaging shows less than ideal bone volume for stability

Adding Bone Material to Support Future Implants

Sinus lift surgery is typically done in one visit under local anesthesia with or without sedation. The procedure involves:

  • Creating a small window in the bone near the sinus
  • Gently lifting the sinus membrane upward
  • Placing bone graft material into the new space
  • Allowing the area to heal and grow bone over several months

After healing, a secure foundation is established for dental implant placement.

What to Expect After a Sinus Lift

Post-operative care instructions will be provided and may include:

  • Avoiding blowing your nose or sneezing forcefully
  • Eating soft foods during the early days of recovery
  • Using saline sprays or medication if recommended
  • Attending follow-up visits to monitor healing

Most patients return to normal activity quickly, with full healing taking several months.
